Rotary screw air compressors make use of helical screws or two rotors to compress air. These are uniquely designed and shaped so that when they turn in the opposite direction, there is very limited clearance between them. Air is then sucked in from one end, kept between two rotating rotors and eventually pushed through to the other end. That’s how they produce compressed air.
There are two types of rotary screw air compressors and they are the lubricated type and the oil-free rotary screw air compressors. You would find that the lubricated kind is preferred by more businesses as it is relatively cheaper than its oil-free counterpart. Usually, oil-free rotary screw air compressors are only bought if the compressed air requirement is oil-free.
Like with the reciprocating compressor, this one features a very simple design. Aside from that it is also a very economical choice as it has about low to medium initial cost, and quite low maintenance cost. It’s very easy to install using a two-stage design for greater efficiency.
Rotary screw air compressors, however, present limited airend life. Most brands have airends that could last about 20,000 while those from major brands have airends that are about 50,000+ years. If you have a failing airend, you should know that they are not really field serviceable and it may require getting taken to the service shop or even rebuilt.
How Do You Know It’s the Right Fit?
Weighing in the advantages and disadvantages of this type of compressor is really important if you want to determine whether it is the right choice for your business or not. In general, rotary screw compressors are the best choice when the requirement is about 15hp or higher. It would also be better if the environment where it will be used is not so extreme. You may also want to consider other factors like maintenance, installation, lubrication, and more.
