How a Rotary Scroll-Type Compressor Works
The rotary scroll compressor is another popular type of compressor. It is commonly used in freezers and fridges to pump around the Freon. It can also be used to compress air in factories or workshops. If you have been wondering how this certain type of compressor works, then wonder no more! Read on to know how this amazing invention works and other additional information about it.
How It Works
This type of compressor has only one moving part. It consists of two spiral elements – one moves in eccentric circles, and the other one remains stationary. So what happens? Air gets trapped between the two spirals at the suction side and gets transported to the center of the spiral. This is how the air is compressed. It takes about 2.5 turns for the air to reach the center exhaust pipe.
This type of compressor is known for many advantages. Firstly, it’s very quiet! It is also designed simply, without many parts, and it is compact-sized. Since it comes with a simple design, the maintenance also comes in low (hardly any). Another big advantage of the rotary scroll-type compressor is that it has an oil-free design. It would just be a matter of changing the air intake filters once in a while.
Since it comes in a compact-size, the tendency for this type of compressor is to also have low capacity (flow, litres/minute of cfpm). Also, due to its innovative design, it also comes in relatively more expensive than oil-lubricated compressors. Also, when the compressor-element fails, there will be a huge possibility that you have to buy a whole new element. The last advantage of this type of compressor is that it gets very hot – much hotter than other types of compressors.
What to Remember
When buying the rotary scroll-type compressor, keep in mind the capacity you would want your compressor to have. Nowadays, there are units with two or four compressor elements in one housing. You also have to check if your equipment is sensitive for water. You will also need a compressed air dryer (this can be installed inside the same unit).
When to Buy
If you need a relatively small amount of compressed air, and you prefer a quiet one, then this scroll compressor is for you! It is commonly seen where a small amount of oil-free air is needed (small specialized workshops, drinking water treatment facilities, and more).
